What clients say
How it works
Booked. Assessed. Informed.
From booking to walking out with your data, here's the full picture of what to expect.
Pick your assessments
Start with a single DEXA scan, or stack several tests in one visit. New to DexaFit? A DEXA on its own is the most common first appointment.
Come in and get assessed
Most tests run 6–20 minutes. No needles, DEXA, VO2, and RMR are all non-invasive. Your appointment is booked longer than the test itself, so nothing gets rushed.
Immediate results explained
No waiting on a lab. We pull your results up on the big screen and take the time to walk you through them, what each number means and what to do about it. Everything lands in the DexaFit AI app too, so you can revisit it later and share it with your doctor or trainer. (Bone density scans are the exception: you leave with a printed report for your doctor, or a physician reads it through the MD Review.)
Before you arrive
How to prepare for each assessment.
These guidelines protect the accuracy of your results. Deviating, even slightly, can affect the data. Every appointment is booked well past the length of the test itself, because the results review is the part that matters, and we don't rush it.
6–11 minute scan
- Fast for 2–3 hours before your session
- No hard exercise beforehand. A normal walk or walking the dog is fine — it's training and heavy lifting we want you to skip
- Hydrate normally. Don't arrive dehydrated, and don't load up on water beforehand either — both shift the reading
- Wear something without metal — athletic wear or leggings are ideal. Avoid denim, and skip thick fabrics like heavy sweatpants or fleece. Small buttons or zippers are fine. There's a place to change if you'd rather come as you are
- Shoes come off for the scan, so wear socks or bring a pair
- Take off jewelry that comes off easily — rings, bracelets, necklaces, watches. Small studs and tiny nose piercings are fine, and so is permanent jewelry that needs tools to remove
- Skip cologne, perfume, lotion, powder and deodorant on your torso that morning — some contain minerals that show up on the image
- No barium, contrast agents, or radionuclides within 7 days (14 days after a barium study)
- Wider or taller builds may not fit inside the scan field. Our GE scanner handles this with mirror mode, a validated method that reads one side and reflects it — your results stay accurate
~10–15 minute scan
- No fasting. Eat and drink normally, and take your regular medications as prescribed
- No calcium supplements for 24 hours — including multivitamins with calcium, and Tums or other calcium antacids. Calcium-rich food is fine; it's the supplements that can skew the reading
- Exercise as usual. Nothing to change about your training

- No barium, contrast agents, or radionuclides within 7 days (14 days after a barium study)
- Tell us about hip or spine hardware, or a previous fracture at either site, so we scan the right places
8–20 minute test
- Fast for at least 3 hours (water is fine)
- No exercise on the day of your test
- Get a full night of sleep beforehand
- Avoid caffeine and stimulants before your session
- Wear athletic shoes and exercise-appropriate clothing
- No running required, unless you want to. Or bring your bike
~15 minute test
- Fast for at least 5 hours, overnight is best (water only)
- No exercise beforehand, rest as much as possible
- Prioritize sleep, morning sessions are ideal
- No caffeine, stimulants, or alcohol within 12 hours
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
- You'll relax under a clear canopy and breathe normally for 15 minutes
Booking a bundle? the DEXA + RMR Pack is 45 minutes and the Works is two hours. In both, well over half the appointment is spent going through your numbers with you on the big screen.
Coming back for a follow-up scan? We scan you on the same machine in the same position every visit, so the comparison between scans is real.
Quick answers
Common questions.
DexaFit pairs clinical-grade equipment with data-powered reporting developed across more than a decade of real-world measurements on four continents. Most providers hand you a number. We hand you the number, the context behind it, the likely drivers, and a clear direction for what to do next.
Yes, and it's the most common way people start. A standalone DEXA Body Scan is $149 for a 30-minute appointment, with no requirement to bundle anything with it. You'll get your body fat percentage, lean muscle mass broken out by region, and belly (visceral) fat, plus time to go through all of it on the big screen before you leave. It also reports a whole-body bone reading for context — that is not a bone density test, so if your doctor has asked for bone numbers, book the DEXA Bone Density Scan instead. If you decide later that you want your metabolic numbers too, you can add an RMR on a future visit or book the DEXA + RMR Pack next time.
Choose your service and time as usual. On the payment step, don't use the coupon box: gift card codes don't work there. Just below it, turn on the Redeem a gift card switch, enter your code and click Apply. The card amount comes off your total, you pay any difference by card, and any balance left stays on your code for next time. See exactly where the switch is.
Yes. Gift cards start at $150, never expire, and work toward any service we offer. You pick the date it's emailed to them, add a message, and they book whenever they're ready. See gift cards.
Yes. It's a separate, site-specific DEXA scan of the lower spine and both hips, with a T-score and Z-score for each site — the one doctors use to assess osteoporosis — and it doesn't need a referral. Two options: $200 printout only, where you leave with the report for your own doctor, or $349 with the MD Review, where Dr. Zalzala, a board-certified physician, reads the scan, emails you a written report, and goes over it with you in a consult. You can add a DEXA Body Scan for $99 with any bone density scan. Full details and booking here.
Yes. A DEXA scan uses an extremely low dose — a body scan is a few hours of the natural background radiation you get outdoors every day, and even a bone density scan is less than a flight from New York to LA. The technology has been used in hospitals and research settings for decades and is considered safe for the vast majority of healthy adults.
Longer than the test itself, on purpose. A single DEXA, bone density scan, or RMR is a 30-minute appointment, VO2 Max is 45 minutes, the DEXA + RMR Pack is 45 minutes, and the Works is two hours. The testing is only part of that: DEXA takes 6–11 minutes, RMR is 15 minutes under the canopy, and VO2 Max runs 8 to 20 minutes depending on your fitness and how you choose to test. The rest of the appointment is spent going through your results with you on the big screen before you leave.
There's free parking directly in front of the suite, so you won't be circling a lot or feeding a meter. Plan to arrive about 10 minutes early. Clients come in from Spartanburg, Anderson, Clemson, Lake Keowee, Hendersonville, Brevard, and Asheville, and I-85, 385, and I-26 can all add time you didn't budget for. Arriving sooner is fine. Our waiting room is open, with comfortable seating for two and a restroom, and we'll be calibrating equipment until your appointment time. Running late? Call 864-990-4425 and we'll do what we can.
No. Most people walk. Our treadmill protocols use a comfortable pace on a gradually rising incline, which produces a fully valid, complete test. If you would rather run, we will test you running. If you would rather ride, bring your bike, most thru-axle bikes are compatible, though check with us beforehand to confirm. We can also test you on your own rower. The test ends when you reach your own limit, whatever that looks like.
No. We use a ventilated canopy hood, a clear, lightweight dome that rests over your head while you relax. There is no mask sealed to your face and no clip pinching your nose, so you breathe completely normally. That matters, because anything that makes you tense or breathe differently can skew a resting measurement. Every patient gets a clean canopy and a brand-new medical-grade filter, the lights are dimmed, and there is relaxing spa music for the 15 minutes.
The DEXA Body Composition Scan is the most critical assessment for anyone losing weight quickly. It shows whether the weight you're losing is fat, muscle, or both, information the scale is completely blind to. During rapid weight loss, roughly 1 in 3 pounds lost can be lean mass. The DEXA tells you whether you're in that group. Pairing it with RMR shows how much your metabolism has slowed as you lose weight, which is the number your daily calorie target should be built on. Most clients on a weight loss plan with their doctor book the DEXA + RMR Pack ($278) first, then a DEXA Body Scan ($149) every 3–4 months while they're actively losing.
Absolutely, and we strongly encourage it. DexaFit reports use the same clinical technology and terminology recognized by physicians worldwide. Many clients bring their results to GPs, endocrinologists, sports medicine doctors, and dietitians. The data is designed to integrate seamlessly into a clinical conversation.
Most clients return every 3–6 months to track how their body is responding to training, nutrition, or protocol changes. If you're actively changing your workout program or diet, or you're losing weight fast, 3–4 months is the better window to see the change. A single session gives you a baseline. Sequential sessions give you accountability and the ability to see what's actually working, down to the tissue level.
