DEXA Body Scan · Greenville, SC

The gold standard. Now yours.

See exactly how much fat, muscle and bone you're carrying — region by region. Our GE Lunar Prodigy reads body fat to roughly ±2%, separates the belly fat wrapped around your organs from the fat under your skin, and splits lean muscle by arm, leg and trunk. Results reviewed with you on the big screen before you leave, a mile from Furman in north Greenville.

A client on the DEXA table with sample results: left leg lean mass, visceral fat and arm fat

Four numbers a scale can't give you.

Whether you're logging miles on the Swamp Rabbit Trail or starting from scratch this year, the effort deserves better feedback than a bathroom scale. Measured, not estimated — and reviewed with you before you leave.

01 · BODY FAT

Body fat, region by region

Not one number for your whole body. Arms, legs and trunk separately, so you can see where it actually sits.

±2%DEXA's precision for body fat. Smart scales and handheld monitors can be 8–15% off.1
02 · BELLY FAT

Belly (visceral) fat

The fat wrapped around your liver and heart. You can't pinch it, BMI misses it, and it drives inflammation around the clock. Reported in pounds.

<1 lbWhere you want to be. Elevated visceral fat tracks with cardiovascular risk independent of BMI.2
03 · LEAN MUSCLE

Lean muscle, split by limb

Total lean mass and the left-right balance behind it — the detail that shows whether a training block actually built anything.

3–8%Lean mass lost per decade after 30, without training to hold it.3
04 · BONE MASS

Whole-body bone mass

Total bone mineral content and a whole-body reading, included with every scan — useful context alongside your body composition.

ContextA whole-body reading, not a bone density test. See the note below.
Two cross-sections at the same body weight: one with fat mostly under the skin, one with fat packed around the organs

Body fat % tells you how much. This tells you where.

Two people can weigh the same and carry the same body fat percentage, and still be in very different shape. What separates them is where the fat sits — under the skin, or packed in around the liver, pancreas and heart.

That deep fat is the belly (visceral) fat we report in pounds. You can’t pinch it, the mirror doesn’t show it, and BMI is blind to it — but it’s the reading most closely tied to metabolic and cardiovascular risk. It’s also the fat that tends to move first when things start going right, which makes it worth watching scan to scan.

Illustration: the same body weight, distributed two different ways.

Read this before you book

This is not a bone density test. They’re two different scans.

Both run on the same GE scanner, and people mix them up constantly — usually right before a doctor’s appointment. If your physician asked you to get your bone density checked, the Body Scan is not the one. Here’s the difference in plain terms.

You’re on this page

DEXA Body Scan — $149

  • Scans your whole body, region by region
  • Measures body fat %, belly (visceral) fat and lean muscle
  • Reports a whole-body bone reading — the app labels it “Bone Mass” and says on screen that the whole-body T and Z‑scores are for context only, not diagnosis
  • For tracking fat loss, muscle gain and metabolic health
What your doctor means

DEXA Bone Density Scan — from $200

  • A targeted, higher-resolution scan of the lower spine and both hips
  • Produces the site-specific T‑scores and Z‑scores physicians use to diagnose osteopenia and osteoporosis
  • Printed report to hand your own doctor, or a written report and live consult with a board-certified physician
  • No referral needed — and you can add a Body Scan for $99 in the same visit

The short version: a doctor’s office will not accept the whole-body bone figure from a Body Scan in place of a bone density test. Booked the wrong one? Tell us before your scan and we’ll switch it.

Why not just use the scale?

Every other method is compared against DEXA. Here's what each one can and can't see.

More than a printout. A report you can use.

Every scan comes with the DexaFit report, reviewed with you before you leave and saved in the app so your next scan compares against this one.

Your scan keeps working after you leave.

Every scan runs through the DexaFit app, so the numbers don’t stop at the printout. It turns the raw measurements into a picture you can follow between visits — and it’s included with every scan, at no extra cost.

  • Your biological age. How your body compares to the number on your driver’s license, calculated from your composition and, if you add a VO2 Max, your cardio fitness.
  • A full-body heat map. Fat and lean mass shown region by region, so you can see where things sit rather than read them off a table.
  • Scan-to-scan tracking. Every visit stacks on the last one, so three months from now the trend is right there instead of in a folder.
  • Shareable. Send the report to your doctor, trainer or dietitian in a couple of taps.

How the visit actually goes.

1

Book online

Pick a time. No referral, no prescription, no insurance pre-approval. Plan on 30 minutes.

2

6–11 minutes on the table

Fully clothed, on an open table — nothing encloses you. The scanner arm passes over you while you lie still.

3

Your results, explained

No portal, no waiting, no follow-up appointment. We put your scan on the big screen and go through every number with you against ranges for your age and sex — and you can ask anything while it’s in front of you.

Three things you leave with. Every time.

Not a number and a handshake.

01 · In the room

Your results on the big screen

We put the scan up and walk you through it line by line — what’s strong, what’s worth watching, and what it means against ranges for your age and sex. Ask as many questions as you like; that part of the appointment is deliberately unhurried.

02 · In your inbox

A PDF of your scan, emailed

The full report is emailed before you leave the building — the same document you just saw on screen, yours to keep, print, or forward to a doctor, trainer or dietitian.

03 · On your phone

Your numbers in the app

Everything also goes into the free DexaFit app, where each scan stacks on the last one. Three months from now the trend is right there, not buried in an old email.

Want to skip the on-screen review and just take the report? Say the word when you arrive.

Most people add the RMR. Here’s why.

A DEXA tells you what your body is made of. An RMR measures what it burns at rest — from your breath under a clear canopy, not guessed from a formula that can be 20% off. The DexaFit app turns that number into daily calorie targets to lose fat, maintain or build muscle, and we show you how to use them. Together they answer both halves of the same question, which is why the pack is the most-booked thing we do.

Both tests run in one 45-minute visit, with one results review at the end. Nothing extra to schedule.

A client reviewing DEXA body composition results during a GLP-1 weight loss program

On a GLP-1? This is the scan that matters.

The scale is dropping. The question nobody can answer from a scale is which pounds — because during rapid weight loss a meaningful share of what comes off can be lean mass, and muscle you lose at 45 is muscle you have to rebuild at 55.

A DEXA separates the two, down to the pound and by region, so you can see whether the loss is going the way you want while there’s still time to change it. Pair it with an RMR and you also see how far your resting burn has moved — the number your calorie target should be built on.

Most clients on a GLP-1 scan before they start or early on, then every 3–4 months while they’re actively losing.

How to prepare

Four things decide whether your numbers are accurate.

Food, drink & activity

  • Fast at least 2 hours — water, electrolytes and black coffee are fine
  • Hydrate normally. Don't arrive dehydrated, and don't load up on water either — both shift the reading
  • No hard workout that day. A normal walk or walking the dog is fine
  • No calcium supplements or antacids like Tums for 24 hours

What to wear

  • Something without metal — athletic wear or leggings are ideal. Avoid denim and thick fabrics like heavy sweatpants
  • Small buttons or zippers are fine. There's a place to change if you'd rather come as you are
  • Shoes come off, so wear socks or bring a pair
  • Take off jewelry that comes off easily. Small studs, tiny nose piercings and permanent jewelry are fine

Worth knowing

  • Skip cologne, perfume, lotion, powder and deodorant on your torso that morning
  • No barium, contrast agents or radionuclides within 7 days — 14 after a barium study
  • Not for anyone who is or may be pregnant. Table limit is 350 lb
  • Wider or taller builds may not fit the scan field; our scanner handles that with mirror mode, so results stay accurate

Questions people ask before booking.

Not the one your doctor means. A Body Scan reports a whole-body bone figure — the app labels it "Bone Mass" and notes that the whole-body T‑score and Z‑score are for context only, not diagnosis. A doctor's office will not accept it in place of a bone density test.

If your doctor asked for bone numbers, book the DEXA Bone Density Scan — a site-specific scan of the lower spine and both hips that produces the T‑scores and Z‑scores physicians use. You can add a Body Scan to it for $99.

DEXA reads body fat to roughly ±2% and reports it region by region. Smart scales and handheld monitors estimate body fat from an electrical signal and can be 8–15% off, swinging with hydration, meals and time of day. Keep the scale for daily weight; use DEXA every 3–6 months to find out what that weight is made of.

Very little. A body scan is a few hours of the natural background radiation you get outdoors every day — a small fraction of a chest X-ray — and even a bone density scan is less than a flight from New York to LA. The technology has been used in hospitals and research for decades. We can't scan you if there's any chance you're pregnant.

No. Book online, come in, and we go over your results with you before you leave. No prescription, no insurance pre-approval. HSA and FSA cards are accepted. We don't bill insurance — which is how we keep the price well below most hospital and imaging-center rates; we'll give you an itemized receipt if you want to submit it yourself.

Booking is online only — use any Book button on this page and it takes about a minute. Call or text 864-990-4425 if you’re not sure which test to choose, if you’re running late, or if the booking page gives you trouble, and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Every 3–6 months is the sweet spot — long enough for real change, soon enough to course-correct. A lot of clients bracket the seasons: once before winter, once when they're back out on the Swamp Rabbit Trail in spring. If you're actively changing your training or diet, or losing weight quickly, 3–4 months is better. We scan you on the same machine in the same position every visit, so the comparison is real.

Yes, and most people do. DEXA + RMR ($278, about 45 minutes) is the most common combination — body composition plus your measured resting metabolism, which the DexaFit app turns into daily calorie targets. The Works adds VO2 Max and grip strength. See pricing.

Sources & notes

  1. Reported precision (repeatability) of DEXA for total-body fat measurement; varies by scanner, software and operator. Consumer bioelectrical-impedance devices (smart scales, handheld monitors) show substantially wider error in validation studies.
  2. Visceral adipose tissue and cardiometabolic risk: large cohort studies (including the Framingham Heart Study) report associations independent of BMI. Association is not causation, and individual risk varies.
  3. Age-related loss of lean mass (sarcopenia); rate varies widely with activity, protein intake and training history.
  4. Method comparisons describe typical published performance of each approach; individual devices and operators vary.

Figures on this page describe findings in published studies of other populations and are provided for general educational context only.
